Abstract: Probability plots are used in frequency analysis to fit the probability distributions to a given series, to identify the outliers and to assess goodness of fit. Gumbel distribution or extreme value type 1 (EV-1) distribution is one of the commonly used distributions in India for flood frequency analysis and point rainfall frequency analysis. At present, many plotting position formulae are in use for this distribution, which provide different results particularly at the tails of the distribution. In the present paper, various plotting position formulae have been compared with the unbiased plotting positions (the expected value of reduced variates) on the basis of certain statistical criteria. The study clearly indicates the suitability of Gringorton plotting position formula for flood frequency analysis using EV-1 distribution.
