Title: SVM-PSO based modeling and optimization of microwave components

Abstract: Support Vector machines (SVM) are increasingly being used in various applications with excellent results. It is a learning mechanism which deals with complexity/accuracy trade-off by minimizing upper bound on expected risk. In this paper, we use SVM to model specific microwave components, namely, Broadband GaAs One-port Microstrip Via and specific Microstrip Antennas. The accuracy of the SVM models is compared against existing Artificial Neural Network models. Another contribution of the paper is in presenting an approach to optimize the design parameters of the Microstrip Antenna modeled using SVM. An improved particle swarm optimization (PSO) algorithm is presented and used to carry out the design process.
