Title: Full-ψ and half-ψ patch antennas for 2.4/5.8 GHz WLAN application

Abstract: A new ψ-shaped patch antenna structure for broadband wireless communication was reported recently by Sharma and Shafai [1 ]. The current paper presents a detailed study of a generalized ψ-shaped antenna structure, its dual-frequency behavior and its optimal design for dual-band WLAN application. The Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO) Algorithm has been used to facilitate the design optimization of the full-ψ antenna for dual-band operation. In addition, a novel half-ψ structure has also been found to exhibit dual-frequency behavior like the case in half-U and half-E structures for broad-band application [2]. A dual-band half-ψ patch corresponding to the full-ψ patch optimized for dual-band WLAN has been presented and has similar bandwidth characteristics. Both the antennas have been fabricated using the dry-etching technique and the measurement results confirm a good antenna performance.
