Title: GIS-predicted isoseismal map of the Garhwal-Himalayas, India

Abstract: Earthquakes are among the most unavoidable natural hazards. Earthquake-related casualties are the cumulative effect of the intensity of ground movement, the vulnerability of slopes to landslides, reactivation of former landslides, etc. In this study, earthquake intensity was evaluated in a GIS (ILWIS) as a function of these factors. The vulnerability of slopes to landslides during earthquakes was measured as a function of morphologic properties of the slopes and the density of vegetation in the area, calculated from an NDVI image prepared from IRS-LISS-I data. Acceleration data of a 1991 earthquake were used to prepare a peak ground acceleration map of the area. These datasets were combined to produce a GIS-predicted isoseismal map of the area around Uttarkashi, Garhwal Himalayas, India.
