Title: Performance evaluation of RAP concrete in aggressive environment

Abstract: In this study, the feasibility of coarse (RC) and fine (RF) reclaimed asphalt pavement (RAP) inclusive concrete for sulfuric acid and hydrochloric acid environments is assessed. Moreover, the efficacy of mineral admixtures such as silica fume (SF), fly ash (FA) and bagasse ash (BG) in 100% RC mix was investigated. Three sets of conditions were selected so as to simulate the worst field situation such as the resistance of concrete in completely saturated and dried state and the effect of both acids on residual compressive strength and hydration process. The resistance of RC mixes was found to be superior to RF mixes in both the acidic environments and in both the simulated states. RF mixes were observed to be more detrimental in chloride solution than sulfuric. Inclusions of SF enhanced the performance of 100% RC mix considerably, followed by BG and FA. However, higher doses of FA resulted in significant loss in mass and strength in a sulfuric environment. Based on the findings, it is recommended to utilize only RC in cement concrete pavements prone to sulfate and chloride attack, whereas 10% of cement can also be replaced by the considered admixtures. ¬© 2018 American Society of Civil Engineers.
