Title: Efficient bulk heterojunction solar cells using tetrasubstituted pyrene derivatives as donors

Abstract: Two new small molecules based on tetrasubstituted pyrene derivatives F4P and DF4P were used as electron donor along with PC60BM or PC70BM as electron acceptor for the fabrication of solution processed bulk heterojunction (BHJ) solar cells. The optimized BHJ device with F4P:PC70BM at weight ratio of 1:2 delivered a power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 2.06%, with short circuit current (Jsc) of 5.9 mA/cm2, open circuit voltage (Voc) of 0.92 V and fill factor (FF) of 0.38. In contrast DF4P:PC70BM produced better PCE of 2.70%, with Jsc of 7.3 mA/cm2, Voc of 0.84 V and FF of 0.44. The PCE of the device based on thermally annealed DF4P:PC70BM blend has been further improved up to 3.63%, which may be attributed to the better charge transport due to the increase in the hole mobility upon thermal annealing. © 2012 Elsevier B.V.
