Title: Polymer composite material with nettle fiber reinforcement: A review

Abstract: Nettle fibers are promising naturally derived reinforcing materials for the preparation of polymer composites. High cellulose contents and tenacity are favorable properties of nettle fibers. Although nettle fibers have been used in rope and textile since ancient times, their application in composite material preparation is relatively new and less in number. This review discusses the background of nettle fiber, its extraction methods, physical and chemical properties, and its application in polymer composite material synthesis. The extraction methods influence the fiber properties, where the combination of decortication and water retting perhaps provides optimum properties. Surface modifications improve the fiber/matrix interphase bonding enhancing the composite's tensile and flexural strength. Nettle fiber composites are suitable for automobile, aircraft panel, and precision tools applications. Nanocellulose extraction is another possibility due to higher cellulose contents, which will diversify the application areas of nettle fibers. © 2021 Elsevier Ltd
