Title: Ultra-large-core single-mode fiber for optical communications: The segmented cladding fiber

Abstract: A 50 μm-core segmented cladding fiber, capable of providing single-mode operation from ≅0.90 μm to ≅1.70 μm was analyzed. The physical principle of the fiber with the radial effective index method was elucidated. The effective core area of the fiber was found to be larger those of any other large-core fiber designs by one or two orders of magnitude.
