Title: EBSD analysis of warm multiaxially forged mild steel

Abstract: Mild steel (0.15%C) was severely deformed by using warm (500°C) multiaxial forging (MAF) technique using up to 9 MAF passes. EBSD analysis revealed that the fraction of low angle grain boundaries (LAB) increased with forging passes up to third MAF pass thereafter it starts decreasing whereas, high angle grain boundaries showed just the opposite trend. It appears that initially grain subdivision takes place with imposition of strain reflected in an increase in the fraction of LAB. After a critical strain these LAB transforms into the high angle boundaries (HAB). At ninth pass, the misorientation distribution is very close to Mackenzie distribution, which suggests texture weakening has set in. The initial coarser grains of average 17 μm size subdivided into submicron sized grains. Grain refinement is confirmed using TEM. After warm MAF, the strength related properties improved significantly, although uniform elongation and total elongation values decreased with increasing strain steps.
