Title: Mechanical property and abrasive wear characteristics of in-situ synthesized Al+12Si/10TiC composites

Abstract: In this study an attempt has been made to investigate the mechanical property and abrasive wear characteristic of in-house fabricated in-situ synthesized Al-12Si/10TiC composite. The microstructural observation revealed that the experimental composite successfully synthesised with a fairly uniform distribution of reinforcements. From the mechanical property test results, it was observed that the addition of 10wt%TiC in Al-12%Si matrix causes 66.7%, 64.5%, and 37.9%increase in 0.2% proof yield stress (YS), ultimate tensile strength (UTS) and bulk hardness respectively. On the other hand, even if, both materials demonstrate a very less ductility, Al-12%Si/10wt%TiC composite exhibits a 22.1% reduction in percentage elongation. The SEM tensile fracture surfaces study revealed that the fracture surfaces of both materials demonstrate a similar brittle fracture. The abrasive wear behavior was carried out using a pin-on-disk machine and the result demonstrate that for both materials, the weight loss and average coefficient of friction increases with increasing the sliding distance as well as applied load. In general, the Al-12%Si/10wt%TiC composite demonstrate a relatively better abrasive wear resistance.
