Title: Capital cost based planning and optimal sizing of a small community smart microgrid

Abstract: A cost-effective microgrid planning is essential for a reliable and economic system. This paper proposes a demand side management (DSM) based planning and optimal sizing of a small community smart microgrid. For encouraging the green energy solutions, a biogas power plant supported by an energy storage system are considered as the distributed energy resources (DERs). DSM is implemented using dynamic algorithms for maintaining system reliability. The integration of DSM results in an overall improvement in the load curve, which is used to reformulate the original optimization problem. The optimization problem is solved for optimal MG size and the optimal cost using a heuristic approach. Various system constraints are considered during the optimization. Results provide the optimal number of DERs, their corresponding optimal ratings, the optimal cost, and the annual savings through a numerical case study. Solutions of the overall problem under consideration are deterministic in nature. © 2020 IEEE.
