Title: Methodology to realize wideband high efficiency power amplifier using active harmonic injection

Abstract: This paper presents a methodology to improve the efficiency of a power amplifier in broadband using an active harmonic injection. The harmonic signal is injected to operate the power amplifier similar to the Class J mode. The second harmonic signal is generated on-board using a frequency doubler whose input is the same as that of the power amplifier. As a proof of concept, a prototype is designed with frequency doubler using 10 W GaN HEMT that generates a second harmonic signal and injects at the drain of main PA designed with 15 W GaN HEMT. The measured results show the drain efficiency of 60.02% to 75.13% with the output power of 42.3 to 42.99 dBm over the band of 600 MHz ranging from 1.2-1.8 GHz. The measured carrier to third order intermodulation distortion is better than -15 dBc in the overall operating band. © 2019 IEEE.
