Title: Network protection security enhancement based on power flow assessment

Abstract: Cascade tripping is a major reason for blackouts throughout the world. Events such as loss of large load or generation and faults may initiate undesirable relay operations, as a consequence of which the system may collapse. This paper proposes a method to identify distance relays in the system vulnerable to maloperate and determine preventive measures to avoid such a situation. Synchronized measurement from strategic locations in the network are obtained which are used for estimating the power flows in the system. Apparent impedance for relays at different buses in the system is calculated using active and reactive power flows of the connected lines. Two indices are introduced in this work: Relay Operation Proximity (ROP) and Security Margin (SM) which are calculated using apparent impedance. Index ROP is used to identify relays which are vulnerable to maloperate and SM provides change in power flow required to avoid relay maloperation. The proposed method is verified for the 39-bus New England system using PSCAD/EMTDC simulations. © 2016 IEEE.
