Abstract: A fired clay brick can be considered to be the most commonly used building material in India. The modular fired clay brick used in the building industry in India has thermal properties based on the virtue of its design as prescribed by the Bureau of Indian Standards. This prescribed design of the brick has a potential to be revised to perform better thermally. This paper presents the idea of form design as a factor in influencing the thermal behavior of the fired clay brick while exploring its effect through digital simulations. This also gives an understanding whether changing the standard prescribed design of the modular fired clay brick helps in improving the thermal performance of the building material as a whole and also the quantification of the impact the design has on thermal performance. © 2019, Springer Nature Singapore Pte Ltd.
