Title: Hygienic and cost efficient technology for the development of tea bag paper from indigenous raw materials

Abstract: The study aims at developing hygienic and cost effective tea bag filter paper from locally available hardwoods, such as Populus deltoides and Eucalyptus tereticornis. Tea bag is a light mass absorbent paper usually made from long fibered chemical pulp, especially treated to give high wet strength. Its main characteristics, permitting a rapid diffusion of the tea extract are: cleanliness, good absorbency, high wet strength, uniform sheet structure. The paper should be able to satisfactorily perform on high-speed packaging equipments with which the tea bags are fabricated and filled up. The pulp, with a high a-cellulose content, is free from hemicelluloses, lignin and ash content, forming bulky sheets with lower strength. Addition of an appropriate ratio of imported softwood pulp improves the physical strength properties. The heat sealing properties are achieved by blending the pulp with synthetic fibers.
