Abstract: Absorbent kraft is a highly specialized paper and exclusively used for the manufacture of decorative laminates. For the development of absorbent properties, like castor oil penetration and water klemn, it is necessary to prepare pulp suitable for absorbent grade. Permanganate number either can be reduced during pulping or by two stage process- pulping at relatively high kappa number, followed by partial bleaching (CEp). Attempts have been made to manufacture the above paper using mill furnish and NDLKCC (New double lined kraft corrugated cuttings). Mill furnishes having pine, bamboo, and eucalyptus in the ratio of 1:2.3:11 does not give water klemn values as per specifications prescribed by decorative laminate manufacturers. It seems that some long fibres blending is required to achieve above mentioned absorption properties. NDLKCC (New double lined kraft corrugated cuttings) which is used for the manufacture of fluting for corrugated medium is a good source of long fibres. Since the kappa number of NDLKC pulp is very high and wet strength resin, rosin size and other additives are present, it is, therefore, necessary to reduce the kappa number and to remove these chemicals. A blend of semi-bleached pulp and treated NDLKC pulp gives promising results. The process can encourage the paper manufacturers to use NDLKCC along with indigenous raw materials for the development of absorbent paper. As no BIS specification for absorbent kraft is available, hence specifications from various decorative laminate manufacturers were collected. These, then compared with the properties laboratory made hand-sheets were made.
