Title: Constructed wetlands: An option for pulp and paper mill wastewater treatment

Abstract: Constructed wetland (CW) systems have emerged as an alternative low cost and sustainable wastewater treatment systems. These are engineered integrated systems of water, plants, microorganisms, and the environment. CWs are mainly classified into two categories: surface-flow and subsurface-flow. Both the systems are capable of removing nutrients, biochemical oxygen demand, chemical oxygen demand, total suspended solids, color, metals, and toxic compounds from industrial wastewaters of different origin. The mechanism of wastewater treatment in CWs includes physical, chemical and biological interactions (aerobic and anaerobic). Plants directly involved in the uptake of nutrients and indirect degradation of pollutants by releasing oxygen in the rote zone and facilitate aerobic degradation of pollutants. Conventional treatment methods are not capable of reducing high organic load and color of the pulp and paper mill wastewater. This is need of time that CWs should be used for the treatment of pulp and paper mill wastewater because their treatment efficiency is high than conventional wastewater treatment systems.
