Title: Probabilistic analysis of desulphurization system in a urea fertilizer plant

Abstract: This paper discusses the behavioural analysis of desulphurization process in a medium-size fertilizer plant. The process consists of four subsystems, namely, pumps (A), cooling system (B), H2S separation system (C) and water rectifier system (D) with three states (viz, good, reduced and failed). Each pump has one standby unit. Taking failure and repair rates for each subsystem constant and exponentially distributed, the modelling is done using simple probabilistic approach. Solution is done by using Laplace transform techniques and the expression for MTBF is computed. For a steady state condition, the availability expression is derived giving the interrelationship among the working equipment. Based on the study, the behaviour of each working unit in the process has been worked out. The computed results are discussed and supplied to the concerned personnel. In their opinion, the study and the analysis will be helpful to management for future plan regarding design modification and/or maintenance strategies for the system.
