Title: Illuminating architectural space with fibre optics

Abstract: Daylighting is a strong tool for architects to create quality space. It has definite advantages over artificial light as it creates positive impact on health, psychology, performance and so on. Most importantly this is available free of cost and a viable option for sustainable living. With advent of science and technology new concept and methodologies for harnessing and distributing daylight are available. One such is optical fibre illumination system (OFIS) in which daylight is transmitted to distant windowless space through optical fibers. Researchers are developing it as an efficient system. Sometimes artificial lightings are also being integrated into OFIS to obtain an optimum solution. This paper presents a general overview on the OFIS.
